What Is Etiolation in Plants?
Etiolation is the stretched, pale growth a plant makes when it is trying to find more light. Stems may lengthen, leaves may stay small, and the plant can look blanched or spindly. What etiolation looks like: An etiolated plant commonly develops unusually long spaces between leaves, weak or thin stems, smaller leaves, and pale yellow-green growth. The exact appearance varies by species, but the overall pattern is stretched growth paired with insufficient light. Too little light is the usual cause: Plants use light to build normal compact growth and chlorophyll. In very low light, many species redirect growth toward reaching a brighter area instead of building sturdy stems and full-size leaves. Etiolation is not the same as garden blanching: Garden blanching is a deliberate technique in which a gardener shields part of a crop from light to make that tissue paler or milder before harvest. Etiolation is an unintended whole-plant growth response to inadequate light. Move toward better light gradually: If the species wants brighter conditions, increase light without suddenly moving a shade-grown plant into harsh direct sun. A gradual transition reduces the chance of leaf scorch while new growth adjusts. Old stretched growth may not become compact again: Improved light usually affects new growth more than the shape of stems that already stretched. Some plants can be pruned or pinched back once conditions improve, but the right approach depends on the species. If a plant is pale and spindly, think about light before reaching for fertilizer. Etiolation is usually a signal that the plant is stretching for conditions it is not getting.
